What I Check Before Approving a Custom CNC Machined Part

Latest company news about What I Check Before Approving a Custom CNC Machined Part

A drawing can look simple and still create problems on the shop floor. In custom CNC machining, the difficult part is often not cutting the material; it is deciding which dimensions actually control the assembly, sealing, movement, or appearance of the final part.

When reviewing a new project, I first separate functional tolerances from general dimensions. A ±0.005 mm requirement may be reasonable for a bearing seat or locating feature, but applying it to every surface can increase machining time and inspection cost without improving performance. I also check thread standards, wall thickness, tool access, burr-sensitive edges, and whether the selected material matches the working environment.

The parts shown here include turned, threaded, knurled, grooved, and milled features, with several surface finishes and colors. That mix is common in prototype and low-volume work. It also creates practical risks: thin sections may distort during clamping, deep bores may need a different tool, and anodized or plated surfaces can change final dimensions. These issues should be discussed before quoting, not after the first failed inspection.

For a reliable quotation, the supplier needs a clear drawing, 3D model, material grade, quantity, finish, and inspection standard. A first article should be measured against the drawing, while critical dimensions should be recorded rather than checked only by visual inspection. Even for a single prototype, documenting the process makes the next revision faster and reduces repeated mistakes.

The best CNC supplier is not simply the one with the lowest price. It is the partner who identifies manufacturing risks early, explains what can be controlled, and provides evidence that the finished part matches the design intent.
